NYT: Former President of Chile Poised to Regain Her Seat
The New York Times reporting that the Chilean Presidential elections of yesterday November 17th, resulted in a Batchelet 46.7% vote total, far outperforming her closest rival at 25%. However, this was not enough to avoid a December run-off election for the seat which she appears favored to win.
The following quote from Batchelet specifically caught my attention relative to my dissertation research here in Chile:
“Chile has voted for our proposals for a more modern and just country,” Ms. Bachelet, 62, told cheering crowds in Santiago, the capital, on Sunday night. “People have voted for free and quality education [emphasis added], for an end to profit, for more integration and opportunities for our children. Chileans have voted for a tax reform to enable the needed reforms in public health, pensions, social policies, and for those who have more to contribute as they should.”
